Restoration of free migration paths of hydrobionts and creation of new hydrotechnical structures with biopositive properties
Based on the study of the structure of hydrobiota and the assessment of negative changes in the target river basin (part of it), a plan of measures for its revitalization is being developed based on technologies for restoring the natural riverbed, free migration paths of hydrobionts, and creating new biopositive hydrotechnical structures.
Purpose
Based on the study of the structure of the hydrobiota and assessment of negative changes in the target river basin (part of it), propose an action plan for its revitalisation based on technologies for restoring the natural riverbed, free migration routes for hydrobionts, and the creation of new biopositive hydraulic structures.
Tasks
- typify the surface body arrays (SBA) of the target basin;
- perform a hydromorphological assessment of the SBS, identify disturbed river sections, important biodiversity locations (habitats) and hydraulic structures that need to be restored, establish flow and discharge rates, and physical and chemical characteristics;
- conduct in-depth studies of biofunds and biotic structure of the MPA communities (phytoplankton, phytobenthos, higher aquatic vegetation, macroinvertebrates, fish) to the extent that meets (exceeds) the requirements of the CMU Resolution No. 758 on the approval of the “Procedure for State Water Monitoring”;
- systematise the pressures and impacts, identify ecosystem services within the identified MPAs, and on this basis develop a general scheme for the revitalisation of the target river basin;
- develop a plan of specific revitalisation measures: measures to restore natural river channels with the possibility of floodplain wandering; measures aimed at improving water quality (such as bioplato); phyto and ichthyomelioration, creation of new hydraulic structures with biopositive properties; fish passage structures at small hydropower plants, measures aimed at water retention and preservation of free river flow, restoration of free migration routes for aquatic life using advanced fish passage structures.
Description
Based on the study of the hydrobiota structure and assessment of negative changes in the target river basin (its part), an action plan for its revitalisation is developed based on technologies for restoring the natural river channel, free migration routes for hydrobionts, and the creation of new biopositive hydraulic structures.
Inventory and hydromorphological assessment of the surface water array of the target river basin (its part), identification of disturbed river areas, as well as areas of important biodiversity locations (habitats) and hydraulic structures that need to be created, restored, or reconstructed are being carried out. In-depth surveys of phytoplankton, phytobenthos, higher vegetation, macroinvertebrates and fish will be carried out at the selected sites to the extent that meets (exceeds) the requirements of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine Resolution No. 758 on approval of the “Procedure for State Water Monitoring”, and an assessment of the ecological status will be carried out.
A plan of specific revitalisation measures is being developed: measures to restore natural river channels with the possibility of meandering through the floodplain; measures to improve water quality (such as bioplato); phyto and ichthyomelioration, creation of new hydraulic structures with biopositive properties; fish passage facilities at small hydropower plants, measures to retain water and preserve the free flow of rivers, restore free migration routes for aquatic life using advanced fish passage facilities.
The social and economic significance of the project is related to the coordination of environmental, economic and technical approaches to the sustainable use of hydro resources in the context of the need to restore water management, infrastructure and fulfil Ukraine’s obligations as an EU candidate for membership in relation to the environmental status of water bodies. Reducing social tensions caused by inadequate assessment of the ecological status and existing threats to aquatic life, the effects of direct pressures and impacts caused by the war, excessive water abstraction and exploitation of bioresources, hydraulic and hydropower construction.
In addition to the action plan with the relevant Technical Conditions, specific recommendations will be developed that can be included in Chapter 8 of the RBMP (River Basin Management Plan) for the relevant river basin region.
