Energy- and ecologically efficient modernization of gas boilers

Purpose

Improving the environmental and energy efficiency of the most common types of medium- and large-capacity gas boilers in Ukraine to the current level of new boiler units introduced in the EU market.

Tasks

• development of project documentation for the modernisation of the most common types of medium and large capacity gas boilers (priority types of boiler units will be selected by stakeholders);
• pilot production of equipment for modernisation, testing.

Description

Several thousand medium- and high-capacity gas boilers are in operation at Ukrainian thermal power plants, CHP plants, industrial enterprises and district heating systems, which were commissioned between 1950 and 1990 and operate with average efficiency ratios of 85%-90%, while the current European level is 94-95% and higher. The specific emission of harmful substances (nitrogen oxides) in these boilers is 2-3 times higher than the standards, in particular those set by EU Directive 2010/75/EU. Their replacement with new ones in the next ten years is impossible for a number of reasons, and their operation leads to a surplus of natural gas in Ukraine of at least 0.5 billion m3 of natural gas per year.
The project envisages the development and pilot implementation of a number of modernisation projects for the most common types of medium and high-capacity gas boilers to bring the specific concentrations of harmful substances in the flue gases of these boilers in line with EU Directives 2010/75/EU and (EU) 2015/2193 and to increase their energy efficiency to the current level of new boiler units introduced on the EU market, with an extension of their service life by at least 15 years.

The heat and power sector includes thermal power plants, combined heat and power plants, municipal heating companies and industrial enterprises.

Potential stakeholders

Owners of enterprises operating medium- and large-capacity boiler units, the government, which is interested in reducing domestic fuel consumption.
