Modernisation of coal-fired boiler units at TPPs and CHPs

Purpose

Development of scientific foundations and methods for modernisation of coal-fired boiler units at TPPs and CHPs, taking into account diversification of their fuel base to ensure stable heat and power supply and load regulation in the power system during wartime and post-war periods.

Tasks

• tests and identification of factors reducing the efficiency and reliability of coal-fired boilers at TPPs and CHPs, including when operating in load control mode and on imported coal with characteristics different from the design fuel;
• calculation studies of furnace and hydraulic processes, including modelling in the ANSYS FLUENT software package, with their comparison with test results;
• improvement of methods for diagnosing and preventing critical deviations in furnace processes;
• development of methods for low-cost modernisation of pulverised coal boilers at TPPs and CHPs to increase their efficiency and reliability;
• improvement of methods of reconstruction of anthracite boiler units at TPPs and CHPPs with their conversion to gas coal;
• development of methods for the reconstruction of medium and low-capacity gas and oil boilers with their conversion to biomass, peat and/or coal combustion. Testing of the developed methods on selected boilers at TPPs and CHPs.

Description

The idea of the project is to carry out applied research and development and implement it at the lowest cost to address urgent issues of energy security and the operation of critical infrastructure facilities. The basis for the project is the ITET’s developments on the conversion of anthracite boilers at TPPs and CHPPs to gas coal. Their peculiarity, which is expected to be observed in this project, is the maximum use of existing TPP and CHP boiler units during the reconstruction of existing equipment. It is envisaged to identify the main factors of decrease in the efficiency and reliability of pulverised coal boilers as they wear out, including when operating in load control mode and on imported coal, to take these factors and the entire possible range of coal characteristics into account in model studies, in the selection and calculation of technical solutions to improve methods of diagnostics and prevention of critical deviations of furnace processes, and in the low-cost modernisation of pulverised coal boilers to increase their efficiency. The new methods of reconstruction of anthracite and gas-oil boilers of small and medium capacity with their conversion to solid fuel combustion without changing the main dimensions and preserving the thermal capacity of the boilers planned in this project will be based on numerical studies of the necessary redistribution of heat transfer depending on the composition of the fuel and the specific consumption of combustion products. The novelty of the developments will be in their focus on the most critical and necessary measures and in their implementation with maximum use of existing equipment, through routine measures or minimal modernisation of boiler units, which will allow them to be tested with the desired effect already during the project period.
